This time of year can be difficult for us single types. It’s cold out, it gets dark early, and sometimes it would be nice to have a built-in cuddle buddy. Plus Valentine’s Day is looming, so everywhere you go you’ve got balloons and jewelry and cards in your face reminding you that you’re going to be by yourself on the date-iest night of the year.

But while there are some crappy things about being single, there are also some amazing perks. My absolute favorite thing about ridin’ solo (insert Jason DeRulo song here) is the sense of possibility that comes with it. You only have to worry about yourself! The world is your oyster! For instance, last week I did a trivia meetup. I met some great new people and afterwards we ended up going to a hardcore rock bar, which I’d never even thought to venture to. Being in a new venue with new friends felt awesome, even if I was slightly out of place in my cheerful polka dot sweater. It was unexpected, fun, and felt like exactly what I should be doing at this point in my life.

Recently my best friend from high school told me she was going to be home this coming weekend. Since I had no Valentine’s Day plans here, I decided to head home too, and now we’ve got a date. There aren’t that many years in your life when you can go wherever you want at the drop of a hat without consulting with other people who are impacted by your choices, so I’m really enjoying the opportunity.

Besides the spur of the moment decisions you can make when you’re unattached, there’s also a sense of possibility about who you might encounter. I’m not yet in the jaded “dating sucks” phase, so every time I’m in a situation where I’m meeting new people, there’s a feeling of excitement about what might happen. I could end up with a ridiculous story, but I also could meet someone really great and end up creating one of my favorite memories.

That’s not to say that you can’t go on adventures, see new places, and be spontaneous when you’re in a relationship. In fact, you should in order to keep your connection strong. But knowing that there’s no one trying to plan their life alongside yours gives you a more profound sense of freedom. And I’m pretty into it.
